AvatarGlenn Williams83% Of Tattoo Inks Contain Links To Cancer And Organ DamageUnbranded - unbranded - NewsworthyA recent study found that 45 of the 54 inks used in tattoo parlors across the United States contain chemicals that can pose serious health risks. Research, conducted by the Department of Chemistry at Binghamton University, on the matter was published in the journal Analytical Chemistry. Tattoo inks contain a pigment & a carrier solution. The pigment provides color, while the carrier keeps it mixed and helps with the application. The study found the most common additive to be polyethylene glycol, a compound that can cause acute renal failure. Some inks also contain 2-phenoxyethanol, which can cause lung & liver irritation & kidney & nerve damage, per the National Institutes of Health. "We’re hoping the manufacturers take this as an opportunity to reevaluate their processes and that artists and clients take this as an opportunity to push for better labeling and manufacturing," said John Swierk of Binghamton University. Tattoos are regulated as cosmetic products in the US and therefore, ingredients don’t have to be approved by the FDA before use. 18 tattoo inks were recalled between 2003 and 2023 after it was found they were contaminated with microorganisms, which can cause infections. Meanwhile, the EU banned two commonly used green and blue inks in 2022 after regulators claimed they contained hazardous chemicals. Our goal is to empower artists and their clients. Tattoo artists are serious professionals who have dedicated their lives to this craft and they want the best possible outcomes for their clients," said Swierk. Pew Research Center reported that more than 100 million Americans have at least one tattoo, while almost half of all adults aged 30 to 49 are inked.
