France’s solar roadway experiment has failed
Solar power highways are hitting a roadblock. Nearly three years after France built a 0.6-mile stretch of photovoltaic road in Normandy, the government is deeming it a disappointing experiment. In 2016, France announced its bold plan to “pave” 1,000 kilometers (around 620 miles) with photovoltaic …

Drones, IoT technologies facilitate spring farming in China
[Date: Recent] [Voiceover] From drones to the internet of things, technology is taking agriculture in China to a whole new level. In the drought-prone province of Guizhou, China’s domestically produced Wing Loong-2H meteorological drone recently conducted a cloud seeding operation to create artificial rain. Local authorities plan to conduct even more drone cloud seeding as the spring farming season gets underway. In the eastern province of Jiangsu, the agricultural landscape is undergoing a digital transformation powered by the internet of things. Across the province, more than 2,000 smart, agrometeorological stations have been set up to monitor and analyze weather and field conditions, allowing farmers to make well-informed decisions in a timely manner. [Soundbite] Yin Hongbao, farmer: "The per-unit yield of wheat has risen from 250 to 500 kilograms, and the per-unit yield of rice has increased from 400 to 700 kilograms. I’m full of a sense of joy and accomplishment." [Voiceover] The IoT technology has also helped farmers in the eastern province of Shandong to optimize their irrigation practices, leading to healthier crops and higher yields. [Soundbite] Du Lizhi, senior agricultural technician, Gaotang County's Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs: "The system is able to save around 50 percent of water and 30 percent of fertilizer during spring irrigation. With it, wheat crops can better withstand dry and hot wind conditions, which really helps increase wheat output." [Voiceover] According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, China's grain output hit a record high of more than 690 million tons last year. [RESTRICTIONS: No access Chinese mainland]
