AvatarMichaelNew Blood Test Detects Alzheimer's 15 Years Early With 97% AccuracyUnbranded - unbranded - NewsworthyA groundbreaking blood test can identify Alzheimer's up to 15 years before symptoms appear. This can potentially lead to a national screening program for individuals over 50 years old. The test demonstrated 97% accuracy in detecting traces of tau protein, which is associated with Alzheimer's disease. The test, offered by diagnostics company ALZpath, was developed during an eight-year trial involving 786 people. The results could simplify and speed up Alzheimer's diagnosis, allowing patients to receive results within days. "This could potentially have huge implications. Everybody over 50 could be routinely screened every few years, in much the same way as they are now screened for high cholesterol," said Professor David Curtis of the UCL Genetics Institute. It is also the first time that a blood test has been found to be at least as good as a painful lumbar puncture at detecting elevated levels of tau. This advancement, along with emerging treatments, may have significant implications for managing Alzheimer's disease.
